Definition: Bread and circuses was a term used in ancient Rome to describe the Emperor’s policy of providing free food and entertainment to the people in order to keep them happy and content. This was seen as a way to prevent revolution and keep the people from rebelling against the government. The term is still used today to describe any government policy that is designed to keep the people happy and content without actually addressing their needs or solving their problems.
Historical note: 1933 Hitler convinced his cabinet to invoke emergency clauses of the constitution that permitted the suspension of individual freedoms of press, speech, and assembly. The Enabling Act of March 23, 1933
So how is this relevant...
Let's take a look at the current environment here in the US of A. Every day we see and hear rhetoric through the mainstream media about some government incentive to allow citizens and illegals to skate through life without working or accountability. Welfare, housing, medical, and even free vacations. We have blatantly plugged shows on TV that encourage gambling on that quick win, some of which are produced by companies owned by political figures such as the Clintons, the Obamas, and Oprah. Casinos are being installed in places that they were once outlawed under the guise of harmless entertainment. All of this is planned to desensitize the population and make them stop thinking for themselves and observing what is going on right under their noses. The superficial and emotional levels are being catered to, in the hopes that the populations will continue to willingly give up their individual rights until it is too late. Additionally, there is the population that is not falling into the lulling of the bread and circuses mentality so that is where the other reference comes into play. This is the start of creating a us vs them mentality. A culture that equates disagreement with hate. A culture that rejects discourse and encourages violence. Lets look at Anatifa, the college campuses (which are supposed to be safe haven for disagreement and discourse), and even the various town halls and other public arenas.
This is a bad mix that unless the population wakes up and starts using their brains and their critical thinking skills, we will wind up in the same place as the Roman Empire and the Germany of the past.
HISTORY IS RELEVANT.
